The global shipping sector, responsible for transporting nearly 90% of international trade, is undergoing a major transition towards low-carbon operations. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted an ambitious strategy to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping by or around 2050, with interim targets promoting the adoption of zero- and near-zero-emission fuels by 2030. In this context, marine biofuels have emerged as one of the most practical near-term solutions owing to their compatibility with existing marine engines and bunkering infrastructure, and their ability to deliver significant lifecycle GHG emission reductions.
India's strategic location along major international shipping routes, coupled with its growing bioenergy ecosystem and expanding port infrastructure, presents a significant opportunity to develop Green Shipping Corridors supported by sustainable marine biofuels. The recent introduction of biofuel-blended marine bunker fuel at Mumbai Port marks an important milestone towards cleaner maritime operations. However, realizing this potential will require coordinated action across government, ports, fuel suppliers, shipping companies, technology providers, and research institutions to address policy, infrastructure, certification, and investment requirements.
In this context, the Indian Federation of Green Energy (IFGE) is organizing a Roundtable on “Green Shipping Corridor: Role of Marine Biofuels in Decarbonizing the Shipping Sector” to deliberate on strategies, partnerships, and policy interventions needed to accelerate the adoption of marine biofuels and position India as a regional hub for sustainable maritime fuel solutions.
