As part of the India BioEnergy & Tech Expo (IBET) 2026, a session on “Efficient Offtake Mechanisms of CBG & Importance of Grid Connectivity (CBG–CGD Integration)” will examine how the CBG produced in the country can be reliably sold, evacuated, and absorbed by the market. The key issues, challenges, and mitigation measures emerging from that session will form the basis of this closed-door Roundtable on “CBG–CGD Synchronization”, to develop a consensus-driven roadmap and policy recommendations for submission to the Government.
India has embarked on one of the world's largest bioenergy programmes through the SATAT initiative and the National Bioenergy Programme, and substantial investment has already been committed to Biogas/CBG capacity. The binding constraint today, however, is not production but offtake. Plants are commissioned but operate below capacity because volumes are not contractually guaranteed, injection into the CGD grid is not assured, pricing needs to be remunerative, and plants located away from the pipeline network have no viable route to market. Unless offtake is predictable, commercially viable, and scalable, further capacity addition will not translate into utilization, revenue, or bankability.
The Government has responded with the CBG–CGD Synchronization Scheme, the DPI Scheme, and CBG Blending Obligations (CBO). Translating these measures into assured offtake now requires coordinated action among policymakers, regulators, CGD entities, gas marketing companies, Biogas/CBG producers, financiers, and technology providers. The Roundtable will provide a dedicated platform for these stakeholders to identify the implementation bottlenecks, contractual gaps, and institutional responsibilities that stand between installed CBG capacity and guaranteed offtake. Its recommendations will inform an IFGE–ACE Recommendations Paper for submission to the Government.
There is a need to build ecosystems to establish a global standard for the Green Certificate and Renewable Gas Certification regimes. It is expected that the Green Certification will then become a source of substantial support for the CBG value chain, helping improve economics and eventually create scale to harness its full potential. The government also needs to support while establishing Centers of Excellence in the CBG ecosystem, including ensuring quality FOM/LFOM and its marketability. Over time, these steps will help increase income, improve economics, and help harness the full CBG potential in the country.
