India imports nearly 70% of its edible oil requirements while generating an estimated 2.8 million tonnes of Used Cooking Oil (UCO) annually, presenting a significant opportunity for biodiesel production. Along with Tree-Borne Oils (TBOs), animal fats, acid oils, and other waste-based feedstocks, biodiesel can play a vital role in enhancing energy security, promoting a circular economy, reducing emissions, and supporting India's net-zero ambitions.
Despite this potential, the sector continues to face challenges related to feedstock availability, fragmented collection systems, limited domestic demand, pricing, and policy support. At the same time, growing global demand for renewable fuels, including Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), presents new opportunities for value addition and exports.
This Roundtable, being organized during the India Bioenergy & Tech Expo 2026, will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, biodiesel producers, feedstock suppliers, technology providers, investors, and researchers to discuss strategies for building a resilient and globally competitive biodiesel ecosystem in India.
